With a glittering coastline, magical harbour and abundance of urban public swimming pools, Sydneysiders don’t have to go far to find the perfect place for a pool day. But if you want to turn Thirsty Merc up to full volume and get silly with your closest friends, nothing beats having your own private space to host the ultimate pool party. With the help of a handy app, you can now hire 130 Sydney pools by the hour at the click of a button.
The app, Swimply, lets you choose from a range of options, including pet-friendly, party-friendly and waterslide-equipped pools. You can even filter the results to find pools that offer amenities such as barbecues and pizza ovens. The best part? You can book pools for a fraction of the price of hiring a venue or hiring a professional cleaner. So if you’re looking for the perfect spot to spend your summer, check out this list of our favourite sdy pools, including a clifftop infinity pool with views across the harbour, a shady pool hidden in a Sardinian-inspired terrace in Newport and a magical, bush-shrouded saltwater pool hiding in a garden in Maroubra.
Reached by a promenade linking Manly and Shelly beaches on the Cabbage Tree Bay Eco Sculpture Walk on the Northern Beaches, this beautiful ocean pool feels like it has hardly changed since its construction in 1929. The tidal pool’s steep steps lead swimmers into the water and a wrap-around pontoon provides an extra level of safety. Located further south, Murray Rose Pool is also an ocean pool that offers swimmers a safe harbourside tidal enclosure. It’s reached via the coastal walking track at Jack Vanny Reserve and has spectacular vistas.
In addition to being a great swim, these pools also provide habitats for fish, molluscs and sea plants. And while the early 20th-century willingness to dynamite rocks and destroy marine life to build these pools would not pass environmental tests now, scientists are working hard to mitigate the damage. At Fairy Bower, next to the Cabbage Tree Bay aquatic reserve in Manly, Sydney Institute of Marine Science scientists are recreating homes for creatures displaced by the pool’s concrete walls.
Ideally, you should aim to have your swimming pool installed in a time when it’s not too hot or cold. Extreme heat can have an impact on the curing process and soaring temperatures can slow down the installation, so spring and autumn are good choices for pool builders. Similarly, winter isn’t ideal, as rain can cause delays.
Pool installation times vary depending on a number of factors, including the weather and the pool design. A pool builder should be able to give you an idea of how long the installation will take based on their experience and your specific needs. Having a realistic expectation will ensure you’re not disappointed when the final product is revealed.
