The HK Prize and Other Awards

HK Prizes

Founded in 2015 amid concerns over press freedom in Hong Kong, HKFP has won or been shortlisted for several journalism prizes thanks to regular backing from a small circle of monthly donors and the determination of its journalists. Its impartial stance and balanced coverage are guided by its Trust Project-backed Ethics Code and Corrections Policy.

The first ever HK Prize was awarded this year to the Chinese-American filmmaker Zhang Yimou for his film Lust, Faith and Dreams, which focuses on the Hong Kong–Mainland relations in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China period. The film received the highest vote from a panel of judges in the main competition category.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activists were nominated this week for the Nobel Peace Prize by US lawmakers. The lawmakers, from both parties, called on the Norwegian Nobel Committee to consider the activists as a global inspiration for their campaign against Beijing’s restrictions on freedom of speech and assembly.

Prizes for the prestigious 25th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon have been increased to boost local runners’ motivation to compete in this year’s event, which will take place on 26 November. Under the new ‘Special Incentive Award for Marathon’, permanent residents who complete the men’s course in less than three hours (sub-3) or women’s course in under three and a half hours (sub-3:30) will receive a special bonus award of HK$10,000.

The HKFA is a yearly film awards ceremony sponsored by the Hong Kong Film Workers Association Ltd and voted on by the members of thirteen professional film bodies in January through March every year. The winner of the best feature film and the winner of the best actor in a leading role are awarded with a cash prize and a trophie.

To ensure the fairness of the draw, a number of measures are taken by HKJC’s security and customer service departments. Employees check and test all materials from boxing to transport, and both the balls and the draw machine are inspected on a daily basis. The same set of balls is not used for two consecutive draws.

The Hong Kong Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation is a HK$2 million award established to recognise outstanding research in science and technology, with the award field focusing on the following areas: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and FinTech. The award will be given to no more than five persons per year.

The prize fund of HKD 3,000,000 is provided by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and bets from the public are deducted at 54% to provide for the award. The remaining proceeds are allocated to various taxes and causes. The selection procedure for the HKD 2,000,000 Hong Kong Prize will be carried out in accordance with scientific and rigorous standards, and there will be an independent review procedure. The winners will be expected to support the Basic Law of Hong Kong and hold high social morality and professional ethics.
