The Hong Kong Prize

The Hong Kong Prize is a merit-based award, honouring outstanding individuals and organisations for their contributions to society. The selection process is designed to uphold excellence, integrity and transparency. From nomination and screening to evaluation by experts, every stage of the process is geared toward upholding the HK Prize’s mission to inspire innovation, creativity and progress and further strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a global leader.

A total of HK$4 million is awarded to each winner under the Prize, including a certificate and a trophy. A citation and media interview are also included in the package. The Prize can be awarded to a single person or organisation per year. The Prize is open to the fields of Scientific and Technological Innovation, namely Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, FinTech and others. The maximum age of awardees is 50 years old at the time of nomination, but the age limit may be extended for exceptional candidates.

In addition to the HK$2.5 million for the winning unit, a further HK$2.8 million is added to the Quartet and First 4 Merged Pools, boosting 1st division prizes to around HK$18 million. These increases in the prize fund are part of a series of measures to address the downward trend in the horse population and support the breeding of quality racing champions.

The HK Prize winners are recognised for their exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions in their respective fields, demonstrating that Hong Kong is truly a world-leading city in the science and technology sectors. The HK Prize is supported by a number of sponsors, and proceeds from bets are donated to various taxes and causes. In addition, a number of measures are in place to ensure the fairness and accuracy of the draw. For example, employees with HKJC’s security and customer service departments strictly check all materials used for the draw, from boxing to transport. All balls are also weighed and examined by X-ray on a regular basis. The draw machine is locked after each drawing.

The winners of the HK Prize will be honoured at a gala event in November. The selection committee of the HK Prize is composed of experts in the fields of science and technology. The Committee will review the applications on a quarterly basis and announce the winner in September 2024. For more details, please visit hk prize.
