The Pao Yue Kong swimming pool complex was officially opened on 9 July 1977 by then Governor Murray MacLehose. It is the only public pool in the Southern District, and was named after Yue-Kong Pao who donated funds toward its establishment. The complex is a flagship project for the development of the city’s sports infrastructure. It was built using a translucent insulated tensile membrane manufactured by Birdair sister company Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo Corporation, with an R-value of 4.90 (U-value of 1.16). The building’s roof was carefully crafted of zinc to minimize glare and maintain a consistent color, with the interior walls made of white plaster coated with a special waterproof coating to resist humidity.
