While Hong Kong’s blazing sun and insufferable humidity can make summer a drag, the city is replete with refreshing public pools that offer gorgeous views. Soaking your worries away surrounded by these picturesque scenes is one of the best ways to beat the heat.
With 22 public swimming pools, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is responsible for organising the operation of these venues. Most pools are open from April to October, although some may close during the winter for annual maintenance and cleaning. Before you head to the pool, be sure to check its individual schedule on the department’s website, as some facilities are closed on different days of the week and for cleaning during certain times of the day.
Ma On Shan Swimming Pool is a sprawling complex that overlooks the Tolo Harbour. On the one side, the complex houses a 50-metre main pool with spectator stands that can hold up to 1,200 viewers. On the other, the venue has several smaller teaching and leisure pools and four waterslides, including two that are claimed to be Hong Kong’s fastest. The venue is free for hotel guests, while non-hotel guests can purchase a ticket to enter.
This pool’s outdoor kid lagoon is a hit with kids and parents alike. It features a range of interactive facilities that include an aqua tunnel, water shooters, slides and more. If you get hangry during your swim, head to the pool bar for a drink and snacks. Non-hotel guests can access the pool on weekdays for a maximum of four hours by purchasing a pass.
Tsing Yi Swimming Pool is another great option for families with children. The spacious venue has a main pool, a teaching pool and a leisure pool designed specifically for toddlers. It also has large water slides that will please older kids and teenagers. To ensure a stress-free outing, bring along a pair of goggles for your little ones to help keep their eyes protected from the harsh sunlight while they swim.
You’ll need a coin to use the lockers at most pools, so be sure to bring a few extra dollars with you just in case. Lockers are located outside of the changing rooms, where you can leave your belongings safely while you enjoy a dip in the cool, clear water. Upon your return, you can retrieve your items and continue on with your day. Just don’t forget to take a photo with the picturesque scenery in the background! It’s a guaranteed Instagram-worthy shot.
