Roullete (pronounced roh-LAH) is a gambling game based on luck, in which players place bets on what number, section or color they think the ball will land in when the roulette wheel stops spinning. It is a popular game at online and land casinos around the world. Some people believe that betting systems can improve a player’s odds but this is unproven.
A Roulette Wheel
The roulette wheel consists of a solid wood disk that is slightly convex and has thirty-six compartments, painted alternately red and black. There is also a green compartment numbered 0. A croupier spins the wheel and a small white ball is dropped into one of the compartments, where it will come to rest. Bets are placed on a table that corresponds to the compartments of the wheel, and players can bet on a single number or various groups of numbers, the colors red or black, whether the number is odd or even, or if the numbers are high (19-36) or low (1-18).
Before the roulette wheel starts spinning, people place their bets by putting chips down on a roulette mat, with the precise location of the chip showing what bet is being made. The chips are then moved to a specialized area of the roulette table where the croupier will place them on the wheel. Bets on six or fewer numbers are called Inside bets, and those on 12 or more are Outside bets.
After the croupier spins the wheel, the ball is dropped into one of the compartments and winning bets are paid out accordingly. The winning number, section or color is noted by the croupier and any losing bets are collected. The remaining winning bets are left up for the next spin. Unlike other casino games, the bets of winning roulette players are their property and not owned by the house.
Roulette originated more than 300 years ago, with the 17th-century French mathematician Blaise Pascal being credited for its invention. It became a popular game in France after the 1790s and spread to Europe, the United States, Japan and elsewhere. There are fanciful stories about the origin of the game’s name, including that it was invented by Dominican monks and was brought to France by Chinese immigrants.
