Roullete is an elegant casino game that’s been delighting and enthralling players since the 17th Century. Its simple rules and high rewards have made it a popular choice for both casual and serious gamblers. Though it may seem like a game of pure chance, roulette has an unexpected depth of strategy for the serious player. The goal is to correctly guess which number or grouping of numbers the ball will land on when the croupier spins the wheel and drops it into one of the colored pockets.
A croupier, sometimes called a dealer, will clear the table and then announce “No more bets.” The croupier then throws a small ball into the spinning wheel. As the wheel spins, the ball bounces around until it settles into one of the numbered pockets on the wheel. If you had a bet on that number, you win.
The Wheel
A roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk, slightly convex in shape and painted alternately red and black. Around the edge of the disk are metal separators, or frets, containing thirty-six compartments numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. A 37th compartment, painted green, carries the sign 0, and two additional green compartments on American wheels carry the signs 0 and 00. The wheel, supported on a spindle and suspended in a static bowl, is rigged to spin either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
The Outside Bets
The easiest way to play roulette is to place your chips on an outside bet, which pays out if any of the numbers win. These bets are better for new players, because they don’t require as much knowledge of the number layout.
There are several different types of outside bets, which differ by how many numbers they cover and whether they’re odd or even. The most basic bet is a street bet, which covers three consecutive numbers on the outer border of the table. This bet pays out 11-1.
Another bet is the Douzaine, which covers a row of six numbers on the table. If you win this bet, the payout is 5-1. Finally, the Line Bet or Sixline bet is similar to the Street bet, but it straddles the line between two rows of numbers instead of three numbers. This bet also pays out at 11-1.
It’s important to set a budget before you hit the tables, as each roulette table carries a placard listing its minimum and maximum bet amounts. This will help you stay within your bankroll and avoid losing too much money if you’re not successful.
